La première composition d’Akobia remonte à 1975. Il compte à son actif environ 400 créations publiées, dont 300 études. Akobia a obtenu de très nombreuses récompenses en tournois internationaux, dont environ 50 premiers prix. Il est également auteur ou co-auteur de plusieurs livres dont "Mat v Etiudakh" (1990) avec Gia Nadareishvili, "World Anthology of Chess Studies" (en 3 volumes) ou encore les 13 cahiers "Study Mosaic" avec David Gurgenidze (1995-2002).
